The random string that came up for day five of my “back to basics” journey is, well, complicated! I decided to treat this like a patchwork quilt. I figured it would give me the opportunity to practice many differeent tangles, all chosen at random. Perhaps too many! This tile has 16 different tangles, two of which are new to me: Moon Pie and Floo-ish. I really love that last one! Choosing all the tangles before I started drawing allowed me to arrange the locations for each so that the composition had a balance that I liked.

Around and around. I ended up with a lot of tangles that were basically circular this time. But with a bit of careful placement, I think I managed to make them all play nice with each other! Pockets. This tangle reminds me of a pocket with a spiral lolipop in it. I wanted to experiment with the various brown pens in my collection, to see how much contrast there was between the various tones. Zentangle drawn on Strathmore Bristol Vellum using a brown Micron and brown and sepia Copic pens. Shading done with Polychromos colored pencils blended with Copic blending marker. Neuron was recently featured as the challenge tangle on a couple of Facebook groups. I didn‘t do this right away, because I wanted to think about how to use the tangle as a string, as I did here. I also wanted to experiment with a few red accents, and I thought the triangles that appear in this design were perfect. I felt the center needed something contrasting, so I chose Nzeppel. Finally, I specifically chose the tangles to go into the other filled spaces so that there were a lot of close line work. It‘s kind of unusual for me to select specific tangles and here, I feel like everything worked very well.
