Random tangles. Random string. This tile has many tangles that I enjoy drawing. Repetitive line work is very relaxing. Squirmy is a favorite because it can fill any space. And Crazy “Nzepple is just fun. Zentangle drawn on Strathmore Vellum Bristol using a black, Micron pen. When I was first learning to tangle, Sandy Steen Bartholomew was one of the few people who had published books on the subject. She has a very unique style, which I found fun and engaging. In particular, her Btl Joos I really loved. I am also attracted to things that are cute, with a little bit creepy twist. Last night, when I was randomly picking tangles to use for today’s tile, Squirmy came up. That got me thinking about digging into my files and using as many tangles as I could round up that would go with it…
This tile has been sitting in my drawer, partially done, for months. I found it when I was looking for unfinished tiles. For some reason, when I first added the Squirmy tangle to a few sections, I really didn’t like it, and felt like I had ruined it. When I pulled it out yesterday, I thought, “Why didn’t I finish this? It’s not bad!” So I added more Squirmy and finished filling in all the sections with Hypnotic. I used both Copic markers and graphite for the shading. And added a bit of white pencil highlights.
Crystalline. The crystal structure at the center of the lab was stable, yet it would grow over time to take up more of the space. What would happen when it filled all of it? It was needed to keep the environment stable on the planet. Would the foliage survive? If the plants grew larger, could they control the crystals? Creatures. As the ship floated just above the surface, she stared out the window at the myriad of creatures. She thought, “The Universe has a bizarre sense of humor!” Zentangle drawn on Strathmore Vellum Bristol using a black, Micron pen. Shading done with graphite pencil. Accents. To me, this looks like pieces of fabric on top of each other, with an accent piece made up of a ribbon rosette and cording sitting in the lower right. I like having some kind of focal point in my drawing but this one isn‘t quite right. It‘s not so much the placement, as the lack of contrast between it, and the tangles under it.
