Art Journal: Blue Bird Sings

This is the reverse side of the card I showed you yesterday .

When I flipped the card over, there was this shape that was part of a speech bubble in the advertisement that was originally on the paper. When I flipped the card upside down, the shape reminded me of a bird, so I went for it.

This began with painting the lighter blue, and violet color on the card, avoiding the bird shape. Then the bird shape was painted in with the dark blue.

I drew around the bird with a white Posca Pen and then inside of that with a black Posca Pen. I colored in the eye with white and black Posca Pens.

I added journaling to the body of the bird with various gel pens.

At this point, I felt it was too plain. Originally, I was going to add some kind of flowers to the background, using the violet color, but then I found this stencil which reminded of lovely bird sounds in the air, so I used it with the violet color on the background.

Since everything was too low key, still, I added the white dots to the spirals with white Posca Pen. Then I used white paint to stencil some journaling on the birds body. I toned that down with Archival ink, applied with a few texture stamps.

Finally, I used a black, ballpoint pen to add some definition to the eye, beak and wing of the bird.

I kept singing to myself all the while I was making this: “Blue Bird sings at the Break of Day!”
