Simple. I wanted just a simple string for this tile so I could concentrate on the tangles. However, two of the patterns were medallions, but they turned out not to be a problem. I just added one to the central area, and repeated the other three time. It works! Zentangle drawn on Strahtmore Vellum Bristol using a black Micron pen. This page was an ever-changing experiment. You can see where I left off a few years ago. It all started with the bunny paper doll. I wanted to experiment with a doll that faced sideways, and with one that wasn‘t a human figure. So I cut the bunny out of an old wallpaper scrap. Then I thought it would look good with a jacket. But after that, I set it aside a bit because I wasn‘t sure where to go with it.

Sometimes I think of arranging tangles on the tile kind of like flower arranging. I didn‘t really draw a string on the tile for this, instead, I had the concept of mixing the Thanksgiving and B‘Dylan together in a bouquet. But then I had to do something with the other random tangles, so this is the end result. Zentangle drawn on Strathmore Bristol Vellum using a black Micron pen.

Odd frequencies. To me, this tile looked like a radio tower sending out programs across the countryside. It wasn‘t intentional, it just ended up like this. I think I‘ll stay away from black tiles. Every so often, I think I can do something cool with a black tile. And every so often, I‘m disappointed. I know that I can do better work than this. It just didn‘t real work on any level. Zentangle drawn on black card stock using Sakura gel pen. Tangles: Bricks Fengle Jetties Knopen Munchin Pepper Ennies

Everything is new. Every tangle on this tile is new for me, the first time I‘ve drawn it. I started out with a vague concept of doing a Steampunk-themed tile, but then just kinda did random new tangles. Parts of it I like, and parts I don‘t. Canal paper I have a pad of this paper that I purchased while visiting Santa Fe a couple of years ago. I liked the neutral tones and thought it would be fun to draw on. It turns out that the texture is a bit rough for tangling, although I made it work. I‘m not sure I like it for shading, or pencil drawing, though. I had a lot of trouble with that part.

I have mixed feelings about this page. This is where I left off with it when I quit working on this art journal. I knew I wanted it to be a goddess figure. The shape is very much like primitive statues found in various archaeological sites. I also wanted to add wings to it. I couldn‘t decide if I wanted to mask off the doll, or just put them right over it.

Elevation. It‘s interesting how much shadow and light influences us. Here, I chose to move the shadows of the disks and D.-D. away from the tangles enough to create the illusion that they were “floeating over the rest. I think it was very effective on this tile. Even though I made a weird mistake in the Eyewa, and “fixed” it by making it a “eye”, this is still one of my favorite Zentangles. I love the blank area in the middle, and so many people have told me various things it reminds them of! What do YOU see? The tangle below Munchin is a variation of Chevron. Hide-n-seek. So, I drew the Marbaix tangle from the random jar two days in a row! I also got another “new” tangle: B‘Dylan, which I like a lot. This time, I hid part of the Marbaix medallion under another section, and I think it works better here. It adds contrast, but doesn‘t entirely take over the tile. No Mojo. This is the first time I‘ve drawn Marbaix. I was thinking it would work as a central medallion, but I think it lacks the “oompf” of some of the other medallion-like tangles. I may experiment with mixing it with some other tangle to see how that works out. Zentangle drawn on Strathmore Vellum Bristol using a black, Micron pen. Plenty. That‘s how many tangles there are in this image. First of all, there‘s my favorite Inapod. I just love this tangle because it‘s easy to draw, kinda funky, and looks dramatic. Then all the rest of the tangles really shouldn‘t work together here, but they kind of do, and the shading lifts and individualizes each section. This is the second page in the art journal. As it happens, it was almost the same color scheme as the cover. Here‘s what I started with. In addition to the words, I finished the apron with some drawn flowers and leaves and added a sash. Since she works in a restaurant, her hair needed to be tied up, so the head band was a must. Other than that, I mostly added dimension and shadow to her clothing using colored pencil.
